It's for offense, not aero. You know how in mariokart, the turtle shell is stored in the front of the car before firing? It's like that. Driver here just doesn't have anyone to fire his kancho cone at in the pic.

This is pre-flowtie. They adopted it from NASCAR where it was on the other side of the car, to help the cars turn left.

I must be behind the times, got to do some catching up. It is a very sturdy piece of kit though, stayed on for almost the whole race.
